A vintage boxed set of hand-dipped beeswax taper candles produced for Freemark Abbey, the historic Napa Valley winery and estate located in St. Helena, California. The candles feature a classic spiral twist design with natural beeswax coloration ranging from soft ivory to warm honey tones.
The set is housed in its original presentation box labeled “Hurd Beeswax Candles – Freemark Abbey, St. Helena California.” The packaging reflects the understated graphic style of mid-to-late 20th century Napa Valley winery goods, designed as elegant gift items for visitors to the estate.
The candles themselves are traditional hand-dipped spiral tapers, a style prized for its slow, clean burn and subtle natural honey fragrance associated with pure beeswax. One candle remains wrapped with its original “Long Acid” manufacturing band, while the second displays its natural beeswax finish.
Estimated Date: circa 1970s
Freemark Abbey is one of Napa Valley’s oldest continuously operating wineries, originally founded in the late 19th century and later revived during the early years of Napa’s modern wine renaissance.
During the 1960s and 1970s, wineries such as Freemark Abbey began offering branded gift items—candles, glassware, corkscrews, and small decorative goods—to visitors at tasting rooms. These products served both as souvenirs and as decorative items that reflected the rustic elegance associated with California wine country.
Beeswax candles were especially popular during this period because they aligned with the artisanal and natural aesthetic wineries sought to convey.

Objects connected to early Napa Valley wine culture offer a small but fascinating glimpse into the region’s transformation during the late 20th century. Gift items like these beeswax candles reflect the rustic elegance that wineries cultivated as California wine gained international recognition.
Whether displayed as part of a wine-themed collection, incorporated into a vintage kitchen or dining setting, or preserved as a piece of Napa Valley history, this boxed candle set captures a charming moment in the culture of California’s wine country.
Freemark Abbey is still in operation in Napa Valley today. However, the Hurd beeswax candle gift sets produced for the winery during the mid-to-late 20th century are no longer available for purchase through the estate.
Because these candles were originally sold as tasting-room souvenirs, boxed examples such as this represent a vintage piece of early Napa Valley winery memorabilia.
At Viridian Eclection, we seek out objects that reflect regional craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and the everyday artifacts that quietly document the past. Pieces such as this Freemark Abbey candle set represent the intersection of artisanal craft and California’s evolving wine culture.
