Coquí frogs are a beloved symbol of Puerto Rico and the Taíno culture. Coquís are named for the very sound of their mating call that the male frogs make at night. Taíno beliefs connected the frog to the spirit world, believing a goddess created it to call for her lost love. The coquí symbol is a powerful emblem of Puerto Rican identity, bridging the ancient Taíno past with present-day culture, celebrating nature, mythology, and a deep connection to the island. There is a Puerto Rican expression that goes, \"Soy de aquí, como el coquí\" which translates to, \"I\'m from here, like the coquí.\"

The Taíno people, indigenous to the Caribbean islands, had a rich and vibrant culture that was deeply intertwined with nature. One of the most fascinating aspects of their culture was their use of symbols, which held significant meanings and were intricately woven into their daily lives. These symbols served as a way to communicate, honor their ancestors, and connect with the spiritual world. Today, exploring Taíno symbols not only offers a glimpse into their ancient civilization but also reveals the timeless wisdom and reverence for nature that still resonates today. Taíno culture is to this day celebrated throughout the Caribbean and particularly in Puerto Rico by Taíno descendants and revivalists. Taíno petroglyphs or rock engravings can be seen at various historical sites throughout Puerto Rico. Taíno symbols are widely depicted in contemporary Puerto Rican art and culture, symbolizing cultural pride and a connection to ancestry and heritage.
