This late-Victorian parlor chair presents a rare and compelling combination: original 19th-century upholstery preserved where it matters most, paired with a thoughtfully recovered seat that restores comfort without compromising integrity.
The high, button-tufted back retains its original horsehair and hay stuffing, a hallmark of serious Victorian upholstery construction. This historic core gives the chair its structure, resilience, and unmistakable character. The seat has been newly reupholstered in a richly patterned textile with complementary trim, chosen to harmonize with the original materials rather than compete with them.
The result is a chair that feels complete, confident, and historically grounded—neither over-restored nor neglected.
→ Solid hardwood frame with carved crest rail and foliate detailing
→ Turned front legs with classic Victorian proportions
→ Original button-tufted back with horsehair and hay stuffing intact
→ Newly reupholstered seat for improved comfort and longevity
→ Decorative upholstery trim applied to the seat edge
→ Traditional joinery and period-appropriate scale
The preserved upper upholstery is particularly significant; horsehair-backed Victorian chairs were designed to endure generations of use and are increasingly rare to find intact.
Victorian parlor chairs were central to late-19th-century interiors, intended for formal sitting rooms and spaces of conversation. Upholstery of the period relied on natural materials—horsehair, hay, jute, and linen—layered by hand to create durable, breathable seating.
This chair reflects that tradition while acknowledging modern expectations of usability through its carefully updated seat. It represents a thoughtful approach to conservation rather than replacement.
Very good antique condition.
The original tufted back shows age-appropriate wear consistent with its period and materials. The seat upholstery and trim are newly completed and excellent. The frame is structurally sound and stable.
This chair offers what collectors and designers look for but rarely find: authenticity paired with livability. It works as an accent chair in a bedroom, study, or sitting room, or as part of a layered, collected interior where texture and history matter.
It is an object with presence—quiet, grounded, and unmistakably real.
