Based on the classic Chinese horseshoe armchair but in a more colonial style, this lovely warm elm chair goes perfectly with our cross legged desk or can be used separately for occasional seating. It has the same \'S\' shaped legs forming an hourglass shape at the front and back, as well as a slightly curved seat with a rattan inlay. The middle backrest is carved in relief with a \'ruyi\', symbolising prosperity, while above this is a lotus flower to denote long life and wealth. The narrow spindles either side that support the curved backrest are not often seen in Chinese furniture - although they did appear on chairs in the late Qing dynasty, specifically on smaller pieces known as rose chairs, used normally in ladies\' quarters.
