HOT ! 1960s English Greaves & Thomas Teak Bentwood Armchairs

A striking pair of beautifully crafted mid century modern armchairs by Greaves & Thomas, dating from the 1960s and showcasing the quality and elegance for which the maker is renowned. The armchairs have been expertly formed from steam-bent solid teak, with gracefully sweeping curved armrests that flow seamlessly into a flared spindle back, creating a light yet sculptural silhouette. The warm teak frames are complemented by finely turned, tapered legs that flare subtly at the base, adding both visual balance and structural strength. The seat cushions are upholstered in a high-quality lime green fabric that provides a fresh contrast to the rich tones of the wood while remaining sympathetic to the period aesthetic. The backs have been intentionally left open to fully reveal the beautifully shaped spindles and highlight the craftsmanship of the design; for additional comfort, loose back cushions can be added without detracting from the exposed structure.

Greaves & Thomas was a London-based manufacturer specialising in high-end contemporary furniture during the post-war period, producing well-designed sideboards, seating and case pieces that reflected the growing influence of Scandinavian modernism. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the company collaborated with leading designers, including Walter Cornell, whose work for Greaves & Thomas is characterised by clean lines, refined proportions and a distinctly Danish influence. In 1967 the company was taken over by Schreiber, marking the end of an era for this respected maker.
